UNELCO: Efate-wide blackout caused by Port Vila plant’s generator issue
Today, October 30, UNELCO has sent its official statement explaining the power outage that took place yesterday around noon, leaving all the Efate island without electricity for more than four hours.
“After investigation of the incident by the technical teams, the issue was identified as stemming from one of the generators at the Port Vila plant. The technical teams restarted the plants and restored the different High Voltage and Low Voltage networks,” UNELCO’s statement says.
“This type of issue, affecting generation plants, is rather rare. Restart process of the generation plants is generally long because they require a significant number of steps and controls. If these controls are not conducted correctly, there is a risk of causing serious damage to the generation equipment and to aggravate the situation.”
